Jasbir Gill moved to Canada at the age of 10. When he was 14, without any warning he got extremely sick at school, sending him to the ER at Surrey Memorial Hospital. A blockage from scar-tissues in his liver cause the blood to back flow. By the time he got to the hospital he had lost most of the blood in his body. A quick response from the amazing team in the ER saved him in the life-threatening situation. Doctors learned that he had a liver disease which had completely damaged his liver and required a liver transplant. It was a hard and long struggle for 10 years before they were able to find a suitable match for him. In 2003, a year he will never forget, he received new liver and has been living a healthy and normal life ever since.
His gratitude for receiving a second life through organ donation, prompted him to give back. He started raising awareness about the importance of organ donation shortly after his transplant. While working with BC Transplant and various other organizations, he realized that he needed to focus more on the South Asian Community which was highly unaware about the Organ Donation registry. A lot of effort was needed to bring awareness. After more than an decade of his dedication to bring light to this cause he collaborated with three other friends who had the same vision and went through similar experiences to found Jivana Organ Donation Society.
